Probably you have ever heard and even used the well-known tool Win7USBDVDTools, backed and distributed by the big star in software making field Microsoft! This handy application allows you to install the popular operating system Windows 7 directly from USB. Though there are many other similar tools developed by hardware vendors, Win7USBDVDTools gradually becomes the first choice for end-users in case they want to install the Redmond product on their device via USB.
Not only providing many popular softwares such as Windows, Office… Microsoft also develops many useful but less well-known softwares and services. Some of them are even total free of charge. Win7USBDVDTools and Microsoft Security Essentials are prominent examples. In this article, you will be introducing another name: Microsoft Standalone System Sweeper Tool, another useful and free tool still in the beta phase.
Microsoft Standalone System Sweeper Tool, as you see in its name, is a standalone software. That means, you can use it for many goals and completely independent, even beyond Windows ‘s kingdom. In short, this is the rescue tool system that allows you to scan your devices with the updated virus signature database. Also, one of the nicest MSSST ‘s feature is that it even works well on any computer, no matter what platform and operating system you are using.
You can easily start-up your system with Microsoft Standalone System Sweeper Tool via USB or CD. It makes these devices bootable. Then, thanks to it, you can scan your PC ‘s security and eliminate any potential and hidden viruses and threats without requirement login Windows.
Perhaps Microsoft goes too late since there are already many similar solutions from well-known security vendors such as Kaspersky, BitDefender and others. However, thanks to its mother ‘s fame, Microsoft Standalone System Sweeper Tool will still able to draw a wide range of attentions for sure.
How to use Microsoft Standalone System Sweeper Too
To get started with Microsoft Standalone System Sweeper Tool, you need first download the package (totally more than 200 MB) that includes application and virus database here.
Unfortunately, this is not a full package software but a tiny pre-install application with 575 Kb only. There are two offers, one for Win 32 and the other for 64 bit one.
After you get this pre-package, install it. Following some steps and you will be given 3 options below:
- Use a blank CD or a blank DVD.
- Use a USB drive that is not password protected.
- Create a Standalone System Sweeper on an ISO file (Advanced).
All of these above offer are worth to try, however, you can choose one based on your interest and need. For instance, if you choose the second suggestion in the list, then you can create a bootable USB flash disk that includes up to date virus signature database MSSS Tool. In my case, I choose the third because it allows me to create a more flexible solution. I can then burn a CD boot whenever I want. Otherwise, it is easy and no cost to store an ISO file. Just choose the folder to store the output, an ISO file.
Because the pre-install is not the full package, then you have to wait a couple of hours before the real Microsoft Standalone System Sweeper Tool software comes to your PC. (It is quite waste of time and efforts to wait for it, but it is really worth to try. However, I think Microsoft should do better than that).
Then, you can burn the ISO to a CD or DVD. The file will enable boot function for these devices. In case you choose USB drive, then you can use USB to boot to the system.
Then, you can use the tool to scan your entire system. Microsoft Standalone System Sweeper Tool allows you to scan certain factors such as disk, USB and so on.
This solution is still in the beta phase, so it is necessary to improve and implement. For instance, currently you can not copy access your drives to copy data. Also, each time you need to use the newest version, you need to create a new ISO file.
In short, Microsoft Standalone System Sweeper Tool is worth to try, though it has just been a beta offer.
